July 2024 Guest Speaker Alan Bilton

Alan Bilton is the author of four novels, The Sleepwalkers’ Ball, The Known and Unknown Sea, The End of The Yellow House, and At Dawn, Two Nightingales, as well as a collection of surreal short stories, Anywhere Out of the World, and books on silent film comedy, the 1920s and contemporary fiction. He teaches creative writing, literature and film at Swansea University.

He will be discussing the topic of Writing Outside The Lines: Breaking the Rules of Fiction

“Much of the craft of fiction consists in the creation of believable, authentic, realistic worlds, worlds that then invite the reader to explore and inhabit them. But what happens if you break the rules of fiction? What happens if the traditional certainties of plot, character and realism no longer seem to apply?

What happens if experimental writing, from meta-fiction to anti-fiction, suspends the rules of gravity and the writer allows their imagination and their writing to finally float free?”

The meeting will take place at 7pm on Tuesday 9 July 2024. Everyone is welcome.

The meeting venue is the Taliesin Arts Centre (downstairs from the main auditorium), Swansea University Singleton Campus, Swansea SA2 8QD. There will also be a zoom link for those who can’t attend in person.
