SDWC Anniversary Writing Competition Rules

PRIZES

  • A cash prize will be awarded to the winners only: £200 for the winning short story; £200 for the winning poem.
  • Winners will be offered honorary membership of the Swansea & District Writers Circle.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Entries must be in English.
  • Entries must be the original work of the entrant.
  • The use of AI is not allowed.
  • Entries must be on the theme of ‘Anniversary’.
  • Entries must not have been published or accepted for publication elsewhere. Entries may have appeared online in private (password protected) peer review sites but should not have been published in any commercial online form including blogs or personal websites.
  • Entrants must be 16 years of age or older.
  • The competition is international and welcomes non-UK entrants.

WORD LIMITS & MAXIMUM NUMBER OF ENTRIES

  • Short stories must not exceed 2,000 words, not including the title.
  • Poetry must not exceed 48 lines, not including the title.
  • There are no lower word limits.
  • You may submit a maximum of 3 entries in total to the competition. Any combination of short stories and poems may be entered.

KEY DATES

  • The closing date for entries is midnight (UK time) on Friday 31 May 2024.
  • Winners will be notified by email by 30 September 2024.
  • The results of the competition will be published on the Swansea & District Writers Circle website after 30 September 2024.

COPYRIGHT & PUBLICATION OF ENTRIES

  • Copyright remains with the author but we reserve the right to publish winning entries, runners up and suitable highly commended entries in our Anniversary Anthology, to be released in November 2024.
  • Entries or excerpts of entries may be published on the Swansea & District Writers Circle website.
  • There may be a need to edit entries before publication in the Anniversary Anthology or on our website. By entering the competition you agree to this editing of your work.

HOW TO ENTER

  • Entries should be submitted using the entry form on the Competition Page of our website. 
  • The title and text of each entry should be pasted into the boxes provided on the entry form. This text must NOT include the name, email address or postal address of the entrant, or any other identifying information.
  • Payment must be made using the competition entry page via PayPal or a credit/debit card. Entries will not be accepted without payment. 
  • To allow us to confirm your payment, please enter the date of your payment in the box provided on the entry form, along with the name of the PayPal account holder, or the name of card holder if you paid by credit or debit card.
  • No corrections will be accepted or refunds given.
  • Entries not complying with competition rules will be disqualified.
JUDGING
The competition will be judged by a panel of judges made up of members of the Swansea & District Writers Circle 

The decision of the judges is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
