It is the aim of SDWC to encourage writing in all its forms.
As well as the Main Group, we also run a sub-group of members that get together once a month to constructively critique each other’s work – this is the Feedback Group. The Feedback Group meets on the third Thursday of the month.
In order to be a part of the Feedback Group you need to be a full member of the SDWC.
At the meetings we discuss the larger issues of the submissions: flow, character, storyline, believability, whatever big issues we need to raise. We fully accept that different people will have different opinions and discussions can get animated, but they are always friendly. Issues of grammar (unless major) and other proofreading issues are left to be handed over on paper or forwarded by email.
Thinking Of Submitting
Note that all submissions are included on a first come first served basis. That said, if a critique is being requested before submission externally, let the organiser know to ensure that it doesn’t get bumped to the next meeting due to word-count restrictions.
Submissions can be poetry, prose, script, developmental pieces or anything else you might want to put forward. If you write short stories that are over 3000 words and want them considered as a whole, please contact the organiser first to see if/how this can be arranged. If you have any questions about submissions not covered here, email the organiser with your question.
Submissions for critique are sent to the organiser up to eight days before the planned meeting. Submissions are to be made by email in Word format (some members do use Pages and other systems, but Word is the widest used). Then, on the Wednesday one week before the meeting, submissions are circulated by email to all SDWC members. The combined submissions will be, in total, around 12,000 words to make sure that we all have time to read them properly.
We meet from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm if necessary – there will be more timing of individual discussions this year though (now the organiser has figured out how to use the timer on their phone!).
We will take submissions from members who are unable to attend the Feedback Group meeting, but if making such a submission please note:
- You need to tell the organiser that you won’t be at the meeting when submitting.
- Submissions from non-attendees will not be discussed at the Feedback Group itself – feedback will be sent directly to the author by any member that opts to review it.
- Please keep individual submissions to a maximum length of around 3000 words. This doesn’t have to be exact, it is a guideline not a hard and fast rule.
- Only a couple of these will be included each month, so again it is on a first come first served basis.
